Abstract: Concerning the world population growth, by year 2025, approximately two-third of the world population would be at risk of facing water stress, if present water usage trend continues. Ministry of Housing and Local Government in Malaysia introduced “Guidelines for Installing a Rainwater Collection and Utilization System” in year 1999, which aims to reduce the dependence on treated water and to provide a convenient buffer in times of emergency or a shortfall in the water supply. Based on the research carried out by National Hydraulic Research Institute of Malaysia (NAHRIM) on a pilot project for a double storey terrace house, rain water harvesting system is able to save up to 34% of public water use, in addition to the 10% of reduction in peak discharge assuming every terrace house has been installed with the same system. Anyway, the economic aspects of rainwater harvesting system appear to the concerns for the success of the system implementation. This paper describes the financial viability of rain water harvesting system in double storey terrace houses in Malaysia. Results shown that payback period is 49 years, Return on Investment (ROI) 4.05% and Net Present Value (NPV) for 60 years using 10% discount rate is -RM 4308.44.
