Abstract: Quantity Surveyors (QS) form part of the consultant team in a construction project as they are always referred as the cost engineer. With higher demand of more sophisticated structures to be built in a quicker way, the need of QS in the construction industry is increasing so that clients are aware of the cost incurred for their projects. Today, holding an academic degree has become a pre-requisite for many jobs including the QS profession. There are a few universities, both public and private in Malaysia have been offering the quantity surveying course to students. However, there are concerns from the construction industry on the performance of the graduates. A number of reports stated that the industry view QS as individuals who fail to challenge established thinking and they add nothing to the construction process cum lack of interpersonal skills and uncooperative. Therefore, it is apt to investigate the performance of quantity surveying graduates in Malaysia. The paper aims to understand the level of competencies of the graduates and the expectations of employers towards fresh graduates who work with them. Findings revealed that the level of performance of the graduates are moderate and the employers expect the graduates to possess a higher level of competency in their attributes than knowledge.
