Abstract:Rapid development in urban areas has increased the importance of sustainable wastewater management with regard to its collection, treatment and implementation strategies. Critical challenges in the field of wastewater management includes its collection infrastructure, treatment process, land use, bio-solids reuse and disposal, effluent reuse, effluent dispersal and the socioeconomic impact to the surrounding community. The Pantai 2 Sewage Treatment Plant (P2STP) was built in 1980 on a 16 hectare piece of land situated 15 km on the southern part of the capital city of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It consists of six ponds capable to treat up to 560,000 PE of wastewater. Under the Greater Kuala Lumpur (Greater KL) masterplan, the P2STP is expected to treat up to 1.423mil PE of wastewater by 2035, almost four times its current capacity. Facing with the challenge of limited land area, the aerated lagoons will be converted into an underground mechanized STP using Advanced Anaerobic-Anoxic-Oxic (A2O) treatment process. Upon completion by 2015, it will be able to treat up to 1.423mil PE of wastewater. Research has shown that A2O treatment technology is capable of treating higher volume of wastewater with a smaller plant footprint. This translates into a lower construction cost per PE of wastewater. With an underground tank, the above ground can be used as sports and recreational facilities, administration building and community facilities which will benefit the surrounding community.
