Abstract
This paper analyzes the changes in the profitability and productivity indices of Japanese construction enterprises in recent years. The analysis used a very large database, called the Business Evaluation Results (BERs), compiled and published under the Construction Business Act. The data used in this analysis reflects the business performances of approximately 120,000 companies between approximately 2009 and 2011. The data from these three years is likely to have been heavily affected by the decline of demand in the Japanese construction sector after the Lehman Shock. As construction enterprises are greatly varied, they are classified by firm size and work type (a classification based on the types of construction work performed) for the purpose of this study. The indices of companies' net sales of completed construction contracts and profits were analyzed to examine the firms' business performances. Furthermore, a macro analysis of productivity was conducted, using the number of engineers employed by each company.
